How to Switch Instagram to a Business Account

HeroContent editorial team

If you use Instagram to promote a product, service, or brand, switching from a personal account to a business account is one of the most important steps you can take. A business account gives you access to Instagram Insights, the ability to run paid ads, a contact button on your profile, and integration with Meta Business Manager. The good news is that the switch takes only a few minutes and is completely free.

Whether you are a local café owner, a freelancer building your personal brand, or part of a larger company managing social media, this guide will walk you through every step of the process.

Why It Matters

A personal Instagram account is built for sharing moments with friends and family. A business account, by contrast, is designed to help you grow an audience and convert followers into customers.

When you switch to a business account, you unlock several features that are not available on personal profiles. You can see detailed analytics about who is viewing your content, where your followers live, what times they are most active, and how individual posts perform. You can also add a contact button — phone, email, or directions — directly to your profile so potential customers can reach you without leaving the app.

Beyond that, a business account is the foundation for running Instagram ads. Without it, you cannot promote posts or create campaigns through Meta Ads Manager. If growth is your goal, making the switch is not optional — it is essential.

What You Need Before You Start

Before you change your account type, make sure you have the following in place:

You need an active Instagram account with a username and profile photo. You should be logged in on the Instagram mobile app — the account type switch is not currently available through the desktop website. Optionally, you can connect a Facebook Page to your business account during setup, which enables additional features like cross-posting and Meta Business Suite management. If you do not have a Facebook Page yet, you can skip that step and add it later.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Open the Instagram App

Launch Instagram on your iOS or Android device and make sure you are logged into the account you want to convert. If you manage multiple accounts, tap your profile photo in the bottom right corner and confirm which account is active.

Step 2: Go to Your Profile

Tap your profile photo or the icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen to open your profile page. From here, tap the three horizontal lines (hamburger menu) in the top-right corner of the screen to open the side menu.

Step 3: Open Settings and Privacy

In the side menu, tap Settings and privacy. This takes you to the main settings panel where you control everything about your account — from notifications to privacy, security, and account type.

Step 4: Find Account Type and Tools

Scroll down within Settings and privacy until you find the Account type and tools option. Tap it. On some versions of the app this may appear as Account first, with a sub-menu that includes the option to switch account type.

Step 5: Switch to a Professional Account

Tap Switch to professional account. Instagram will walk you through a short onboarding flow. You will be shown a preview of the features you are about to unlock — analytics, ads, and contact options. Tap Continue to proceed.

Step 6: Select a Category

Instagram will ask you to choose a category that best describes your account — options include things like Retail, Restaurant, Health/Beauty, Education, and many others. This category appears on your public profile and helps Instagram show your content to the right audience. Choose the option that most accurately describes your business, then tap Done.

Step 7: Choose "Business" (Not "Creator")

After selecting a category, Instagram will ask whether you want a Business account or a Creator account. For most brands, companies, and service providers, Business is the right choice. It gives you the most complete set of professional tools. Creator accounts are better suited to individual influencers and content creators who want a lighter-weight professional setup. Tap Business to continue.

Step 8: Connect a Facebook Page (Optional)

Instagram will offer to connect your account to a Facebook Page. If you have a Page, tap Connect and follow the prompts to link them. This enables you to manage both platforms from Meta Business Suite and Meta Business Manager, run ads across both channels, and sync content more easily. If you do not have a Facebook Page, tap Skip — you can always connect one later through your profile settings.

Step 9: Add Contact Information

Enter the contact details you want to display on your business profile — this can be an email address, phone number, or physical address. These will appear on your profile as contact buttons. You can choose to show all, some, or none of them. Tap Next once you have filled in what you need.

Step 10: Review Your Profile

Once setup is complete, your account is now a business account. You will see an Insights option in your profile menu, a Promote button on posts, and a contact button on your profile (if you added contact info). Take a moment to review your profile to make sure everything looks correct.

Common Issues and How to Fix Them

I do not see the option to switch to a professional account. This can happen if the Instagram app is out of date. Go to your device's App Store or Google Play Store and update Instagram to the latest version, then try again.

I was asked to agree to terms I am not sure about. The terms Instagram presents during the switch relate to using professional tools and advertising features. They are standard and do not change your content ownership. Review them at your own pace, but they are required to proceed.

My category is not listed. Instagram offers dozens of categories, but it is possible your exact business type is not listed. Choose the closest available match — you can always update it later from your profile settings by going to Edit Profile and tapping Category.

I connected the wrong Facebook Page. You can disconnect and reconnect Pages at any time. Go to Settings and privacy → Linked accounts, remove the existing Page, and reconnect the correct one.

Tips to Get the Most Out of a Business Account

Fill out your profile completely. A complete profile — including a bio, contact info, website link, and category — signals professionalism to potential followers and makes it easier for people to find and trust you.

Check your Insights regularly. Instagram Insights shows you which posts get the most reach, when your followers are online, and where your audience is located. Use this data to post at optimal times and double down on content types that perform well.

Use the contact button strategically. If you are a service business, make sure your email or phone number is set up as a contact button. This reduces friction for potential clients who want to reach out.

Consider adding a link-in-bio tool. The single link in your Instagram bio is valuable real estate. Use a tool like Linktree or a custom landing page to point followers to multiple destinations — your website, booking page, latest offer, and more.

Keep your category and contact info updated. As your business evolves, so should your profile. Review your category and contact details periodically to make sure they still reflect what you do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will switching to a business account affect my existing posts or followers?

No. Switching account types does not remove any of your existing posts, stories, saved content, or followers. Your account history is preserved exactly as it was. The only changes are the new features added to your account.

Can I switch back to a personal account later?

Yes. You can revert to a personal account at any time by going to Settings and privacy → Account type and tools → Switch to personal account. Keep in mind that you will lose access to Insights and professional tools if you switch back.

Is a business account free?

Yes, switching to a business account is completely free. You only pay if you choose to run paid advertisements through the platform.

Do I need a Facebook account to use an Instagram business account?

No, you do not need a Facebook account. The Facebook Page connection is optional and can be skipped during setup. However, connecting a Facebook Page unlocks additional features and is strongly recommended if you use both platforms.
