How to Create a Facebook Business Manager Account

HeroContent editorial team

Creating a Facebook Business Manager account — now officially called Meta Business Manager — is the first step toward professionally managing your business's presence on Facebook and Instagram. It gives you a dedicated workspace separate from your personal Facebook profile, where you can organize your Pages, ad accounts, Instagram accounts, pixels, and team members.

Whether you are setting this up for the first time or helping a client get started, this guide will take you from zero to a fully functional Business Manager in under thirty minutes.

Why It Matters

Many business owners start by managing their Facebook Page directly from their personal Facebook account. This works at first, but it creates problems fast. When you hire a social media manager, you have to share your personal login. When you bring on an agency, there is no clean way to grant professional access. If your personal account gets hacked or suspended, your business Page goes with it.

Meta Business Manager solves all of this by creating a professional layer between your personal Facebook account and your business assets. Your personal profile stays private. Access to your Pages, ads, and tools is managed through a structured permission system. And if team members change, you update their access in Business Manager — no password changes needed.

What You Need Before You Start

You need an active, personal Facebook account. This account becomes the initial administrator of your Business Manager. You do not need to use your personal profile for business purposes — Business Manager keeps the two separate. You also need your business name, a business email address (not a personal Gmail or similar), and your website URL. These are used to set up the account and verify your identity.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Go to business.facebook.com

Open a web browser on your computer (Business Manager works best on desktop). Navigate to business.facebook.com. If you are not already logged into Facebook, you will be prompted to log in.

Step 2: Click "Create account"

On the Business Manager landing page, click the Create account button, usually located in the top-right corner. If you already have a Business Manager, Facebook will ask whether you want to create an additional one or open the existing one.

Step 3: Enter Your Business Name

A dialog box will appear. Enter your Business name. This should be your official business name — the one that appears on your website, legal documents, or branding. Customers and partners will see this name when they interact with your Business Manager (for example, when you send them a partner invitation).

Step 4: Enter Your Name and Business Email

Your name will be pre-filled from your Facebook account. Confirm it is correct. Then enter your business email address. This is important — use an email you check regularly, as Meta will send verification links, security alerts, and important notifications to this address. Avoid using a shared inbox that multiple people access, as it may cause security issues.

Step 5: Fill In Your Business Details

On the next screen, you will be asked for additional business information, including your business website and possibly your country and business phone number. Fill these in accurately. This information is used if you later go through the Meta business verification process, which is required for some advanced features.

Click Submit to create the account.

Step 6: Verify Your Email Address

Meta will immediately send a verification email to the business address you provided. Open your email inbox, find the email from Meta, and click the Confirm now button or link inside it. You must complete this step to activate your Business Manager account fully.

Step 7: Explore the Business Manager Dashboard

Once verified, you will be taken to your new Business Manager dashboard. This is your main hub. The left sidebar contains navigation for all your tools and settings. The main area shows an overview of your recent activity and quick links to key sections.

At this point, your Business Manager exists but is empty — you have not yet added any Pages, ad accounts, or Instagram accounts. The next steps cover adding those.

Step 8: Add Your Facebook Page

Click the menu icon (grid icon) or go to Business Settings via the gear icon. Under Accounts, click Pages, then AddAdd a Page. Search for your Facebook Page by name or URL. Select it and click Add Page. You must be an admin of the Page to add it this way.

Step 9: Add or Create an Ad Account

Go to Business Settings → Ad accountsAdd. If you already have a Facebook ad account, select Add an ad account and enter the account ID. If you are starting fresh, select Create a new ad account and follow the prompts to set the account name, currency, and time zone. Remember: currency and time zone cannot be changed after an ad account is created, so choose carefully.

Step 10: Add Team Members

Go to Business Settings → PeopleAdd. Enter the email address of each team member you want to invite. Assign them a role (Admin or Employee) and click Invite. After they accept the invitation, assign them to specific assets — Pages, ad accounts, Instagram accounts — with the appropriate task permissions.

Common Issues and How to Fix Them

I see the option to "switch" to a Business Manager I already have instead of creating a new one. This means you already have at least one Business Manager. Consider carefully whether you truly need a second one. Most businesses should use a single Business Manager. Creating multiple Business Managers unnecessarily can cause asset management and billing confusion.

My email verification link is not working or has expired. Go to Business Settings → Business info and look for a "Resend verification email" option. If you no longer have access to the email address you used, update it in Business Settings first.

I cannot find the "Create account" button. If you are already logged into a Business Manager, the landing page at business.facebook.com may redirect you to your existing dashboard. Click the account name at the top and look for an option to create a new business.

My Business Manager was disabled immediately after creation. This can happen if Facebook's automated systems flag the account as suspicious, often because the personal Facebook account used is new or has unusual activity. Contact Meta Business Support to have the account reviewed.

Tips to Get the Most Out of a New Business Manager

Verify your business early. Meta offers a business verification process that unlocks additional features and increases trust when working with partners and agencies. Start the verification process through Business Settings → Security center as soon as your account is set up.

Set up two admins from day one. If you are the only admin and you lose access to your Facebook account, you lose access to your Business Manager. Add a second trusted admin — a co-founder, a senior team member, or a trusted technical contact — immediately.

Name your assets clearly. When you create ad accounts and pixels, use names that clearly identify what they are for. Names like "Brand X — Facebook Ads" and "Brand X — Website Pixel" are far more useful than generic defaults.

Do not mix personal and business assets. Business Manager should contain only assets related to your business. Avoid adding personal Pages or side projects to the same Business Manager as your main brand — create separate Business Managers for separate entities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have more than one Business Manager account?

Yes. Meta allows you to create up to two Business Manager accounts per personal Facebook account. If you genuinely manage multiple separate businesses, you may want a separate Business Manager for each. However, if you are managing multiple brands or clients for one company, it is usually better to manage everything under one Business Manager using its asset and permission system.

Is Business Manager different from Meta Business Suite?

They are related but serve different purposes. Business Manager (business.facebook.com) is where you manage settings, assets, and permissions. Meta Business Suite (business.facebook.com/latest/home) is where you do your day-to-day work — creating posts, replying to messages, and reviewing analytics. Think of Business Manager as the back office and Business Suite as the front office.

Do I need to pay for Business Manager?

No. Meta Business Manager is completely free to create and use. The only costs you incur are when you run paid advertising campaigns through your connected ad accounts.

What happens if the admin who created the Business Manager leaves the company?

This is a common problem with serious consequences. If there are no other admins, the Business Manager can become effectively unmanageable. This is why adding a second admin immediately is strongly recommended. If the original admin is gone and there are no others, contact Meta Business Support for account recovery options.
