How to Add a Location to Instagram Posts

HeroContent editorial team

Adding a location to your Instagram posts is one of the simplest and most consistently overlooked tactics for increasing reach and discoverability. When you tag a location, your post becomes visible in that location's Instagram page — which anyone can browse by searching for the place. For local businesses especially, location tagging is a direct way to appear in front of people who are looking for things to do, places to eat, or services in a specific area.

This guide covers how to add a location to Instagram feed posts, Reels, and Stories, and explains how to get the most out of location tagging for marketing purposes.

Why It Matters

Instagram has a built-in location discovery feature. When someone searches for a city, neighborhood, venue, or landmark, they can see all public posts tagged to that location. This means your post can be surfaced to people who have never heard of your account — just because you tagged the right location.

For restaurants, cafés, hotels, gyms, retail stores, and any other location-based business, this visibility is enormously valuable. A post tagged with your specific venue (your restaurant's name, for example) can show up when someone searches for that restaurant — perhaps a customer who dined with you and wants to find your page, or a potential customer browsing reviews.

Beyond discoverability, location tags also add context to your content. They tell a story — "this was shot here, these products are available here, this event happened here" — which builds authenticity and local connection.

What You Need Before You Start

You need an active Instagram account. Location tagging is available to all account types — personal, Business, and Creator. To tag a business location, that business must already have a Facebook Place or Instagram location associated with it. If you want to add your own business as a location that others can tag, you need to create or claim the location through Facebook Places (this is done via Facebook, not directly through Instagram). Your device location services do not need to be enabled to add a location manually, but they help Instagram suggest nearby locations.

Step-by-Step Guide

Adding a Location to a Feed Post or Reel

Step 1: Create Your Post

Open Instagram and tap the + icon to create a new post. Select your photo or video, apply any edits or filters, and proceed to the final caption screen.

Step 2: Tap "Add Location"

On the caption screen, below the area where you write your caption, you will see several options including Tag people, Add location, and others. Tap Add location.

Step 3: Search for the Location

A search bar will appear with suggested nearby locations (if your location services are enabled). You can scroll through suggestions or type in the search bar to find a specific location — a city, neighborhood, business name, landmark, or venue.

As you type, Instagram shows matching locations from Facebook's database. Select the correct location from the results.

Step 4: Confirm and Publish

After selecting the location, you will be returned to the caption screen. The location name will appear below your username at the top of the post preview. Review your caption, tags, and location, then tap Share to publish.

The location tag will be visible on your post as a clickable link below your username. Viewers can tap it to see all public posts tagged to that same location.

Adding a Location to an Instagram Story

Step 1: Create or Capture Your Story Content

Open Instagram, swipe right or tap the camera icon to open the Stories camera. Capture or upload your story content.

Step 2: Add the Location Sticker

Tap the sticker icon (the face with stars) at the top of the screen. From the sticker tray, select Location. A search bar will appear — type the name of the location you want to tag. Select the correct location from the results.

Step 3: Position the Sticker

The location tag will appear as a sticker on your story. Drag it to where you want it on the screen. You can tap it to cycle through different sticker designs (some show the location name in different styles).

Step 4: Share the Story

Tap Your story (or select specific close friends) to share. The location sticker will be visible and tappable on your story. Users can tap it to see the location's aggregated story feed, which includes stories from other accounts that also tagged the same location.

Common Issues and How to Fix Them

I cannot find my business location when I search. Your business location must exist in Facebook's Places database. To add it, go to Facebook and create a check-in at your location, which prompts Facebook to create the place. Alternatively, go to Facebook Pages, find your Page, and ensure the physical address is set (this creates the corresponding Place).

The location I want is not in Instagram's database. Instagram relies on Facebook's location database. If a location does not exist there, you cannot tag it. You can create the location by checking in at that address on Facebook. It may take a few hours or days for the new location to appear in Instagram's search.

I tagged the wrong location. Edit the post (tap the three dots → Edit) and change or remove the location tag. For stories, you cannot edit a published story — you would need to delete it and repost with the correct location.

My location-tagged posts are not appearing in the location page. Location pages show posts from public accounts. If your account is private, your tagged posts will not appear in the public location feed. Make sure your account is set to public if discoverability is your goal.

Tips to Get the Most Out of Location Tagging

Always tag your own business location. If you own a physical location, tag it in every post. This creates a growing archive of your own content accessible through your location page, and makes it easy for customers to find all your Instagram content when they search for your venue.

Tag the most specific location available. Tagging "New York City" is less useful than tagging "Brooklyn, New York" or better yet, your specific venue name. The more specific the tag, the more targeted the audience who will find your content through that location page.

Encourage customers to tag your location. Add a note to your venue, website, menus, or packaging encouraging customers to tag your location when they post about their experience. User-generated posts tagged to your location build a social proof gallery that is publicly visible.

Use location tags for events and pop-ups. When attending or hosting events, trade shows, markets, or pop-ups, tag the event venue. This is a great way to reach the audience of people interested in that specific event who are browsing its location page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does adding a location tag improve Instagram engagement?

Research and general practice suggest that location tags do help — primarily through increased discoverability rather than direct engagement improvement. Posts with location tags tend to have broader reach because they appear in location-based searches. More reach can lead to more engagement, but the location tag itself is primarily a discoverability tool.

Can I add a location to a post after it has already been published?

Yes. Tap the three dots on the published post, select Edit, and you can add or change the location tag. This allows you to add locations to older posts retroactively.

Can I add more than one location to a single Instagram post?

No. Instagram only allows one location tag per post or story. If you want to reference multiple locations, you can mention them in the caption using text — but only one can be tagged as the official location of the post.

Does the location I tag need to be where I currently am?

No. You can tag any location regardless of where you physically are when you post. This is useful for businesses that want to tag their own location even when posting remotely, or for travel content that is posted after the trip.
