How to Create a Facebook Ad Account

Redaktion HeroContent

Creating a Facebook ad account is the foundational step for running paid advertising campaigns on Facebook and Instagram through Meta Ads Manager. Without an ad account, you cannot create campaigns, set targeting, or manage your advertising budget. The process takes only a few minutes, but the settings you choose during setup — especially currency and time zone — are permanent, so it is worth understanding them before you click Create.

Why It Matters

Meta Ads Manager is one of the most powerful digital advertising platforms in the world. With a Facebook ad account, you can reach billions of users on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Meta's Audience Network. You can target people based on demographics, interests, behaviors, location, and more. You can retarget website visitors, run video campaigns, collect leads, and drive direct purchases — all measurable, all optimizable.

But none of that is accessible without a properly set-up ad account. Getting the configuration right from the beginning — in the right Business Manager, with the right currency, assigned to the right people — sets the foundation for everything that follows.

What You Need Before You Start

You need an active Meta Business Manager account. Admin access to that Business Manager is required to create a new ad account. Have your business name, operating country, currency, and time zone ready. You will also need a valid payment method (credit card, debit card, or PayPal) to add after the account is created. Note: you cannot run ads until a payment method is added, even if the account itself has been created.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Log Into Meta Business Manager

Go to business.facebook.com and log in with your Facebook account that has Admin access to your Business Manager.

Step 2: Open Business Settings

Click the gear icon in the lower-left sidebar. This opens Business Settings, which is the control center for all your Meta business assets.

Step 3: Go to Ad Accounts

In the Business Settings left sidebar, under Accounts, click Ad accounts. This shows all ad accounts currently connected to your Business Manager.

Step 4: Click "Add" → "Create a New Ad Account"

Click the blue Add button. Select Create a new ad account from the dropdown. Do not select "Add an ad account" (which is for adding an existing account by ID) unless you are adding one that already exists.

Step 5: Name Your Ad Account

Enter a clear, descriptive name for the ad account. Good naming convention examples: "Company Name — Facebook & Instagram Ads", "Brand X — Main Account", "Client Name — Paid Social Q1 2026". Clear names become critical if you ever manage multiple accounts.

Step 6: Select Your Time Zone

Choose the time zone that represents your business operations. This setting determines when your daily budget resets and how campaign scheduling is applied. Use your local business time zone, or the time zone of your primary target market if it differs from your location. Important: this cannot be changed after the account is created.

Step 7: Select Your Currency

Choose the currency in which you will be billed. This should match the currency of the payment method you plan to use to avoid foreign exchange fees. Common choices are USD, EUR, GBP, or your local currency. Important: the currency also cannot be changed after creation. If you choose incorrectly, you would need to create a new ad account with the correct currency.

Step 8: Click "Create Ad Account"

Review the name, time zone, and currency one final time, then click Create or Create ad account. The account will be created immediately.

Step 9: Assign People to the Ad Account

Business Manager will prompt you to assign team members. Add yourself first (with Admin access), then add any other team members or agency partners who need access. Roles available:

  • Admin: Full access including billing management
  • Advertiser: Can create and manage campaigns but not billing
  • Analyst: View-only access to performance reports

Click Assign or Confirm after selecting roles.

Step 10: Add a Payment Method

Your ad account is now created, but you cannot run ads until you add payment information. Open Meta Ads Manager at adsmanager.facebook.com. In the left navigation, click Billing or go to the account settings and find the billing section. Click Add payment method and enter your credit card or other payment details.

Meta operates on a postpay system by default — you run ads and are billed periodically (when you hit a billing threshold or at the end of the month). You can also add funds in advance (prepay) in some countries.

Step 11: Connect Your Facebook Page and Instagram Account

To run ads, connect your Facebook Page and Instagram account to this ad account. Your Facebook Page is selected at the Ad level when creating campaigns. Your Instagram account should be connected to your Business Manager and linked to the Facebook Page. Both are managed in Business Settings → Pages and Instagram accounts.

Common Issues and How to Fix Them

The option to create a new ad account is greyed out. New Business Managers have a limited number of ad accounts they can create — often just one or two. This limit increases as your Business Manager builds history through active ad spend. Contact Meta Business Support if you need to increase your limit.

I created the ad account with the wrong currency. Unfortunately, currency cannot be changed. Create a new ad account with the correct currency and transfer your campaigns or rebuild them there. Alternatively, contact Meta Business Support — in some cases they can transfer or adjust accounts, though this is not guaranteed.

My ad account was immediately restricted. This is an automated security response. New accounts from new Business Managers with limited history can trigger fraud detection systems. Contact Meta Business Support, explain your business, and request an account review. Providing your business website and details speeds up the process.

I added a payment method but it is being declined. Some cards are not accepted by Meta's system (certain prepaid cards, for example). Try a different card. Also check that your billing address matches what your bank has on file — mismatches can cause declines.

Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Facebook Ad Account

Set an account spending limit immediately. In Ads Manager → Billing, set an account-level spending limit as a safety cap. This prevents a runaway campaign or configuration error from generating unexpected charges. You can always increase the limit when you need to.

Spend a small amount early to build account history. Meta's systems trust accounts with an established payment history more than brand-new accounts. Running a small campaign soon after creation — even just a few euros or dollars worth of spend — helps establish that history and can smooth the path to higher spend limits.

Request a credit line for large advertisers. Once your ad account has a solid spending history, you may be eligible for Meta's credit line arrangement, which extends a credit term rather than requiring payment at the time of billing. Contact your Meta account representative if you are spending significantly.

Keep billing notifications active. Meta sends emails when payment methods fail or billing thresholds are reached. Make sure the email address associated with your Business Manager is an active inbox that you monitor. Failed payments can pause campaigns unexpectedly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Facebook ad accounts can I create?

The number of ad accounts you can create in a Business Manager depends on your account's history and spend. New Business Managers typically start with a limit of one to two. This limit increases over time as you spend more. Meta has not published a specific maximum, but large agencies can have dozens of active ad accounts.

Is there a minimum spend required to keep an ad account active?

There is no required minimum spend. However, ad accounts with long periods of inactivity may have their spending limits reduced or may require reactivation. Keeping at least occasional activity in an account helps maintain its status.

Can I use the same Facebook ad account for multiple businesses?

Technically possible, but not recommended. Mixing multiple businesses in a single ad account complicates billing, reporting, and permissions management. It can also cause delivery issues if one business's ads affect the account's trust score. Use separate ad accounts for separate businesses.

What payment methods does Meta accept for Facebook ads?

Meta accepts major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover), PayPal, and in some countries, bank transfers or local payment methods. Prepaid cards are generally not accepted. The available options vary by country.
