How to Connect WhatsApp to Instagram

Redaktion HeroContent

Connecting WhatsApp to your Instagram business profile adds a WhatsApp button to your profile — a tappable contact option that opens a WhatsApp chat with your business directly. For businesses that use WhatsApp as their primary customer communication channel, this integration makes it dramatically easier for potential customers to reach out without having to copy a phone number, open a separate app, and search for the contact manually.

This guide explains how to set up the WhatsApp button on your Instagram profile, what requirements apply, and how to get the most out of this connection.

Why It Matters

WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app in many regions of the world, particularly in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Asia. For businesses in these markets, WhatsApp is often the preferred channel for customer inquiries, order confirmations, bookings, and support.

The WhatsApp button on Instagram closes the gap between a potential customer discovering your business on Instagram and reaching out. Instead of requiring the customer to find your phone number, add it to their contacts, and then message you — all steps that introduce friction and drop-off — they can simply tap a button on your Instagram profile and a chat opens instantly.

What You Need Before You Start

You need an Instagram Business account (personal accounts cannot add contact buttons). You need a WhatsApp number — this can be a regular WhatsApp account or a WhatsApp Business account. A WhatsApp Business account is strongly recommended for businesses, as it offers additional features like automated replies, product catalogs, and business profiles. The phone number must be active and accessible, as it will be the number that customers message when they tap the button.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Go to Your Instagram Profile

Open the Instagram app and navigate to your profile by tapping your profile photo in the bottom right corner.

Step 2: Tap "Edit Profile"

Tap the Edit profile button below your bio.

Step 3: Navigate to Contact Options

Scroll down the edit profile screen to find the Contact options section. This section includes options for adding contact buttons: Call, Email, Directions, and WhatsApp (if available on your account).

Alternatively, look for a Business information section that groups your contact options together.

Step 4: Tap "WhatsApp" or "Add a Contact Button"

If your account has the WhatsApp integration available, you will see a WhatsApp option. Tap it. If you do not see it directly, tap Contact options or Add action button to see the full list of available contact buttons.

Step 5: Enter Your WhatsApp Phone Number

A screen will appear asking you to enter the WhatsApp phone number. Enter the number that is registered on WhatsApp, including the country code (for example, +1 for the US, +44 for the UK, +420 for Czech Republic). Make sure this is the number you want customers to message.

Step 6: Verify the Number

Instagram may send a verification code to the WhatsApp number you entered to confirm that it is active and you have access to it. Open WhatsApp on the device where that number is active and find the verification code message. Enter it in Instagram to confirm.

Step 7: Save Your Profile

After verification, tap Done or the save icon to save your profile changes. Return to your profile to see the WhatsApp button now visible on your profile page.

Step 8: Test the Button

Tap the WhatsApp button on your profile to confirm it works correctly. It should open a new chat in WhatsApp or the WhatsApp Business app with your business number pre-filled. If you want to test it from a customer's perspective, view your profile from a different Instagram account and tap the button there.

Common Issues and How to Fix Them

I do not see a WhatsApp option in the Contact Options section. Not all accounts have the WhatsApp integration available, and availability varies by country and account type. Ensure your account is set to Business type (not Creator or Personal). Try updating your Instagram app to the latest version. If it is still not available, the feature may not yet be rolled out in your region.

The verification code is not arriving on WhatsApp. Make sure the phone number you entered is exactly correct, including the country code. Check that the WhatsApp app on that number is active and has an internet connection. If no code arrives, wait a few minutes and request it again.

The button shows on my profile but clicking it gives an error. Make sure the WhatsApp app is installed on the device being used to click the button. Also check that the WhatsApp number is still active and has not been recently changed or deleted.

I connected the wrong WhatsApp number. Go back to Edit profile → Contact options → WhatsApp and update the phone number. Remove the current number and enter the correct one, then verify the new number.

Tips to Get the Most Out of the WhatsApp Connection

Use WhatsApp Business (not the personal app). WhatsApp Business offers features that are essential for handling customer inquiries at scale: automated greeting messages, away messages, quick replies for common questions, and a product catalog. Set these up before you start receiving messages from Instagram visitors.

Set a greeting message. In WhatsApp Business, you can set an automatic greeting that sends when someone messages you for the first time. Use this to acknowledge their message and set expectations — for example: "Thanks for reaching out! We're here Monday–Saturday 9am–6pm and will reply as soon as possible."

Feature WhatsApp prominently in your bio. In addition to the contact button, mention WhatsApp in your bio text — "WhatsApp us 24/7 via the button below" or similar. Some profile visitors may not notice the contact buttons and will benefit from the direct mention.

Connect WhatsApp to your Facebook Page too. If you also use Facebook for your business, connect WhatsApp to your Facebook Page as well. This creates a consistent customer experience across both platforms. See the guide at /en/blog/connect-whatsapp-to-facebook-page for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect WhatsApp to a personal Instagram account?

No. The WhatsApp contact button is only available on Instagram Business accounts. If you are using a personal account, you would need to switch to a Business account first to access this feature.

Will customers see my personal WhatsApp profile photo and name?

If you are using a regular WhatsApp account, customers who message you will see your personal WhatsApp profile. If you are using WhatsApp Business, they will see your business profile — which is separate from your personal WhatsApp. Using WhatsApp Business for this integration is strongly recommended to maintain a professional image.

Can I connect WhatsApp to Meta Business Manager?

Yes. WhatsApp Business API can be fully integrated into Meta Business Manager, allowing you to manage WhatsApp messages alongside Facebook and Instagram from one platform. This is most relevant for businesses with high message volumes. For small to medium businesses, the basic WhatsApp Business app connected to Instagram is usually sufficient.

Is there a cost to using the WhatsApp button on Instagram?

No. Adding a WhatsApp contact button to your Instagram profile is free. Standard WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business usage is also free. Costs only apply if you use the WhatsApp Business Platform (API) for automated large-scale messaging.
