Instagram Shopping transforms your Instagram Business profile into a shoppable storefront. Once you connect an Instagram Shop, you can tag products in your posts, stories, and Reels — and customers can tap those tags to view product details and make a purchase without leaving Instagram. For e-commerce businesses, this direct path from content to purchase is one of the highest-converting features on the platform.
This guide explains the requirements, the complete setup process, and how to use Instagram Shopping effectively to drive sales.
Why It Matters
Instagram's visual format is naturally suited to product discovery. People are already scrolling through content and seeing images of products they might want — the gap between "that looks great" and "I want to buy it" has always been bridged by a cumbersome redirect to a website. Instagram Shopping closes that gap dramatically.
With product tags active, a potential customer can be watching your Reel, tap the shopping tag on a product they like, see the price and description, and be one or two taps away from purchase. The reduction in friction between discovery and purchase is significant — and it directly impacts conversion rates for businesses that implement it well.
What You Need Before You Start
You need an Instagram Business account. Instagram Shopping requires a Facebook Page (not just an Instagram account) and a Meta Business Manager account. You need a product catalog. This can come from a supported e-commerce platform (Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, etc.) or be created manually in Meta Commerce Manager. Your business must operate in a country where Instagram Shopping is available — check Meta's current list of supported countries. Your products must comply with Meta's Commerce Policies (physical goods only; certain product categories are not permitted). You must have a website domain that you own and can verify.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Ensure Your Instagram Account Is a Business Account
Go to your Instagram profile → Settings and privacy → Account type and tools. Confirm it is set to Business. If not, switch it to Business.
Step 2: Connect Instagram to a Facebook Page
Your Instagram account must be linked to a Facebook Page. In Instagram settings, go to Account → Linked accounts → Facebook and connect your Page. This is required for Instagram Shopping.
Step 3: Set Up a Product Catalog in Meta Commerce Manager
Open Meta Commerce Manager at business.facebook.com/commerce or through the Business Manager menu. Click Add catalog and select E-commerce (for physical products). Name the catalog and add it to your Business Manager.
You have two options to populate the catalog with products:
Option A — E-commerce platform integration (recommended): If you use Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, or another supported platform, connect it to your catalog. This syncs your products automatically and keeps prices, descriptions, and availability up to date without manual work. In Commerce Manager, go to your catalog → Items → Add items → Use a partner platform. Follow the prompts to connect your store.
Option B — Manual upload: Add products manually one by one, or upload a bulk product data feed (CSV or XML format). This is more work but works for businesses without a supported e-commerce platform.
Step 4: Verify Your Business Domain
Meta requires you to verify the domain of your website before products in your catalog can be tagged in posts. Go to Business Settings (business.facebook.com) → Brand safety → Domains → Add. Enter your website domain and follow the verification steps (typically adding a meta tag to your website's HTML or a DNS TXT record through your domain registrar).
Step 5: Submit Your Account for Shopping Review
Once your catalog is set up and your domain is verified, Instagram will prompt you to apply for Instagram Shopping. Go to your Instagram profile → Settings and privacy → Account → Set up Instagram Shopping (or find it under Business tools). Follow the application flow and submit your account for review. Meta will review your account, Page, catalog, and website to ensure they comply with Commerce Policies.
This review typically takes a few days but can sometimes take longer. You will be notified via email and in-app when the review is complete.
Step 6: Enable Shopping on Your Instagram Profile
After approval, return to your Instagram Settings → Account → Business → Instagram Shopping and enable it. Select the product catalog you want to use for your Instagram Shop. Your profile will now have a Shop tab visible to visitors.
Step 7: Tag Products in Your Posts
Now you can tag products in new posts and Reels. When creating a post, proceed to the final screen and tap Tag products. Search for the product by name from your catalog. Tap the area of the image where the product appears and select the product from the results. You can tag up to 20 products per carousel and up to 5 products per single-image post.
Step 8: Add Product Links to Stories
In Instagram Stories, tap the link sticker (chain link icon) and select a product from your catalog. This adds a tappable product link to your story.
Step 9: Set Up Your Instagram Storefront
Go to your profile → tap the View shop button. From here, you can organize your shop with collections (curated groups of products), set a featured collection, and manage how your storefront looks to customers.
Common Issues and How to Fix Them
My application for Instagram Shopping was rejected. Common reasons include: website does not match the products in the catalog, the business does not comply with Meta Commerce Policies, the website is not fully functional (incomplete pages, no checkout, etc.), or the account has policy violations. Review the rejection reason in your Business Manager notifications and address the specific issues before reapplying.
Product tags are not appearing as an option when I create a post. Make sure Instagram Shopping has been approved and enabled on your account. Also ensure your catalog has active products in it. If both are confirmed, try logging out of Instagram and back in.
My catalog is not syncing with my Shopify store. Go to Commerce Manager → your catalog → Data sources and check the sync status. If there is an error, reconnect the Shopify integration. Also check that your Shopify products are published and in stock.
The "Set up Instagram Shopping" option is not visible in my settings. This option only appears on Business accounts in countries where Instagram Shopping is available. Confirm your country is on Meta's supported list and that your account is set to Business type.
Tips to Get the Most Out of Instagram Shopping
Tag products consistently across all post formats. Make a habit of tagging products in every relevant post — feed posts, carousels, Reels, and stories. The more touchpoints where customers can access product information, the higher your chances of converting browsing into buying.
Create dedicated shopping Reels. Reels have strong organic reach. A Reel that showcases a product in action — how it looks, how it works, who it is for — with a shopping tag attached is both an engaging piece of content and a direct sales tool. Combine entertainment or education with commerce for the highest impact.
Use collections to organize your shop. Create product collections that reflect how customers think about your products — by season, occasion, price range, or use case. Well-organized collections make your storefront easier to navigate and increase the chance of customers discovering products beyond the specific ones they clicked on initially.
Run Instagram Shopping ads. Once your catalog is set up, you can run Catalog Sales campaigns through Meta Ads Manager that dynamically show people products from your catalog based on their interests and browsing behavior. These dynamic product ads are among the most effective ad types for e-commerce brands on Meta's platforms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Instagram Shopping available in all countries?
No. Instagram Shopping availability varies by country and is gradually expanding. Check Meta's current documentation for the latest list of supported countries. If shopping is not available in your country yet, you can still add your website link to your bio and use link stickers in stories to direct customers to your online store.
Do I need a website to use Instagram Shopping?
Yes. Meta requires a website to verify your domain and to ensure that the products in your catalog are legitimately sold by your business. The website should have a complete product catalog, functioning checkout, and clear business information (contact details, return policy, etc.).
Can I sell digital products through Instagram Shopping?
No. Instagram Shopping is designed for physical goods only. Digital products, services, and subscriptions are not eligible for Instagram Shopping at this time.
What is the difference between Instagram Shopping and a regular Instagram post with a website link in the bio?
Instagram Shopping allows product tags to be embedded directly in the post — customers can tap the tag to see pricing and product details without leaving Instagram. The bio link method requires customers to tap the bio link, navigate to a website, and find the product. The in-post tagging method has significantly less friction and typically converts better.
